Flying to Istanbul and Skiing in Turkey
On Tuesday night, I’ll fly out of JFK all the way to Istanbul, Turkey, where I will join a group of travel writers for a press tour that will include the big city and the resort area of Kayseri. This is a large city, in fact, one of the fastest growing industrial centers in the world. I learned this about Kayseri from Wikipedia:
“The pace of growth of the city was so fast that in 2004 the city applied to the Guinness Book of World Records for the most new manufacturing industries started in a single day: 139 factories. Kayseri also has emerged as one of the most successful furniture-making hubs in Turkey earned more than a billion dollars in export revenues in 2007.”

Our trip will give us time to sightsee in Istanbul and see the eye-popping Hagia Sofia, the Blue Mosque and the Covered Bazaar, one of the oldest shopping malls in the world. Then we’ll fly to the center of Turkey to Kayseri and go skiing on Mount Ercives, an extinct volcano. It will be interesting to see what skiing in another country is like and to see this striking volcano that sticks up above all of the other mountains in the region.
We will also tour Cappadocia, known for its famously bizarre looking underground cities and cone-shaped rocks, then we’ll see Ulchisar, in the Goreme Valley. We will also visit Urgup, Zelve and a remote town called Gesi. I can’t wait to experience all of this and share it right here, with you!
