Pownal, Vermont Beckons for a Father Son Getaway

I have a long history of taking weekend trips with my dad to Williamstown; we made that trip more than 25 times over the course of 26 years.  Finally, the day came when even with the option of taking the train, the 5-hour journey north was too much for Nat Hartshorne.

So today, at age almost 67, I carry on the tradition… I’m going away to Pownal, Vermont with my son Sam Hartshorne, and we have a full weekend of fun set in a nice four-bedroom house we’ve rented. I made a whole itinerary so we’ll include some local sights like the desk where Robert Frost wrote poetry, the Bennington Monument, the outdoor indoor music venue called Unihog where we are going to an ’80s dance party. I’m not sure what I should wear… What did people wear in the 80s?

This will be relaxing and fun. I suspect that, like my dad and I, we will have much to talk about as we drive northwest toward this small Green Mountain community.

I love strolling a downtown, and we’ll do that on Saturday in the bustling town of Bennington. I like to take our time and poke around the shops and talk to local folks. Breakfast at a diner, and a nice dinner at a local brewery in the Vermont tradition.
