I joined my lunchtime pal Ed today for lunch in my town, which is a rare occasion. We usually venture out to Amherst, Hadley or Northampton, but today it was a short 1-mile drive to this little spot right next to the railroad tracks for some barbecue.

While I miss the creemee that used to offer its wares late night to locals. When I asked the folks who run the Back Porch BBQ joint what happened to the soft serve, the answer was blunt–“That’s not our thing.”

But their thing, smoky barbecue, is quite good and I think more and more people are discovering the place. We saw cars coming and going and a good lunch crowd on this Thursday when we stopped in.

The offer a weekday all you can eat buffet, and for $9.99, it’s a good deal.  I walked up to the steam tables and plucked out some pulled pork, brisket, some smoked chicken, some macaroni and cheese and the best thing of all….their beans.  The beans had been cooked with meat and had a sweet/savory taste. Really good. Then the server brought out small containers of two of my other favorites, potato salad, and coleslaw.  It was all delicious!

Ed choose the half rack of baby back ribs, which was a huge portion that he could barely finish for $13.95.  We sat out on the picnic tables where rolls of paper towels helped us with our sticky hands. I’d recommend this place for sure, and even though the ice cream is gone, this is a great addition to our town’s restaurant scene.
