At Tanglewood, Cellphones Barely Work, So No One Knows the Score
Despite the threat of rain, the crowd was large and happy last night while we watched Garrison Keillor take the stage in a light khaki suit and sing with the Wailin’ Jennies and a woman named Nancy who sings with Nickel Creek. The only thing that stumped me was the utter lack of a care about how the US was faring in their World Cup match against Ghana.
Tanglewood is a lovely place, with the rolling green of the lawns and the unmatched clarity of the sound. But it’s also in a pocket so you can’t get cell reception, even enough to glance down at a score. I kept wondering if the news was of an another big victory, and whether someone would announce from the stage that we had won the game.
If this was in another country, surely they would have!
But despite never finding out about that, the evening of music was another year of simple pleasure. And keeping with this theme, at four o’clock today I will join my buds for poker. Now there’s a simple pleasure. Has twenty bucks ever bought anything as worth it as time around a table with close mates, battling it out without wild cards at the gentlemanly art of poker? I think not.
