It’s Wednesday, November 22, and it might as well be the holiday. Last night was the big crush of traffic on the highways, the airports were mobbed and according to NBC, more people will hit the road this week than ever before.
Thanksgiving remains the only true four-day holiday we have all year, so let’s celebrate and have fun!
I read through some of my old posts from over the years–there have been a few times when I traveled during Thanksgiving. In 2009, I went to Iran, because there was no other trip date that could accommodate a dream destination like that.
It turned out to be smashing! Then Paul Shoul and I flew off during the holiday to attend the Iron Bowl in Tuscaloosa Alabama, with 103,000 fans, screaming either ‘WAR EAGLE’ or ‘ROLL TIDE!’. That game was memorable, and our subsequent trip that took us to a hunting lodge and to meet a man who was an expert bass fisherman was a lot of fun.
One year I went on a solo driving trip to New Zealand, departing right on Thanksgiving. I remember the excitement of driving alone, on the right side of the highway and meeting some Mauris who told me all about their many traditions and explained their tattoos.
Though I’ve spent many great Thanksgivings on the road, I am happy that this year, I’ve cleared the path. I turned down a trip to Slovenia, so, like everyone else, I will have my four-day weekend, eat a lot of turkey, throw a football around in the backyard, and maybe indulge in a tryptophan-induced turkey coma.
Yes, lots to be thankful for, and many great Thanksgiving travel memories to cherish too. Happy pre-Thanksgiving!
