Waking up Feeling like Dinosaurs, with Covers Askew

The languid, sodden days of dripping, unrelenting and oppressive heat have slunk upon us. Did you also wake up, like I did, with covers askew, a fan blowing nonstop, and into air you could cut with a knife?  Welcome to July, if it’s ever going to be hot this year today will be the day, and this will be the week. Nobody wants to get out of bed, they stay with their twisted up covers and lie like dinosaurs.

It’s a good day to fly over to a place where they rarely complain about summer heat and humidity. I am eager to see tomorrow morning what the north of England feels like during an American East Coast heat wave. Now on to the packing. Which will it be? Should it be the Lands End small suitcase I don’t have to check? Or the Queen Mary, the silver luxury liner suitcase that rolls on four wheels, always has to be checked, and does not actually hold that much more?  I think of myself on the A line, sitting with my headphones on, with that suitcase in front of me. Who will be on that one-hour subway ride today, from Manhattan all the way through Brooklyn to JFK’s monorail?

Since American Airlines has introduced this route, do you think they’ll try to pull that crap about offering ‘mixed cocktails, wine and beer for $7, cards only, we don’t accept cash?” routine?  Do you, like me, get insulted when you’re asked for fork over on a transatlantic flight?  The last time we flew to Manchester, it was on USAirways from Philadelphia.

As the drink cart came around, the FA sort of smirked, agreeing that she wouldn’t pay that $7, so why would we want to? So that time I settled for Ginger Ale. But AA is celebrating a new route, and has invited journalists like me to come aboard and experience flying the AA way. Doesn’t that mean they want to give us free drinks? Please?
