Daniel Tosh Will Soon Be a Network TV Star
February snow is falling on Mountain Rd. and it’s time to begin another day. Last night I found a guy on the Comedy Channel who I think will become a huge TV star some day. He is Daniel Tosh, and he hosts a modern-day version of the old Candid Camera, using web videos and snarky comments. It’s a simple concept…but when I later saw his name on Facebook and Twitter, I knew this guy was an up-and-comer.
The Comedy Channel has redefined what’s cool and what’s funny on TV. Consider Jon Stewart’s fanbase, and how many people consider The Colbert Report a must-see. The other day Stewart squared off against Bill O’Reilly, and it was really great TV. It seems that people like Stewart just say those things we all wish people would say to politicians and Fox news blowhards, that must be why he’s so popular. Anyone in power knows that you’ve gotta be able to take Stewart’s crap if you want to reach 20-somethings.
This Daniel Tosh show simply uses videos and photos gleaned from the web and pokes fun at them. He then injects himself into the mix, like when he gave a semipro football player a chance to do a play over again after he mistakenly tackled a member of his own team. Tome set up players on another football field, (though he used female players to make it more fun) and then gave the hapless linebacker a shot at the same play all over again, this time, instead of tackling the teamate he blocked for him.
I guarantee we will all be hearing more about Daniel Tosh, and it will be network TV soon. These days, the best the flailing big guys can do is to find these cable TV gems and bring them up to the big leagues.
